Nuggets stay near the top in latest NBA Power Rankings

Denver Nuggets basketball is back. Through the first three games of the season, there’s been a lot to be happy about for fans of Mile High Basketball, as the team has been scoring at a historic rate and the new guys off the bench have been showing just how scary this team can be when firing on all cylinders.

As a result, Denver has stayed inside the top three in the latest NBA Power Rankings. They started the season as the No. 2 team in the ranks behind the Oklahoma City, and dropped one spot this week behind the Golden State Warriors, who pulled off a thrilling comeback win over the Nuggets last week and have looked like a true contender in the Western Conference to start the season.

After that season-opening loss to Golden State, the Nuggets have rebounded with a convincing win over the Phoenix Suns and a strong second half performance against the Minnesota Timberwolves. Jamal Murray has come out the gates blazing — highlighted by a 43-point outburst on Monday night — while Nikola Jokic has become just the third player in NBA history to record a triple double in each of the first three games of the season.

While things have been looking good for Denver, there’s still plenty of improvement to be had. Cam Johnson has not yet meshed with the rest of the starting lineup, Christian Braun has looked shaky in two of the three games after signing his $125 million contract extension and the defense has been lackadaisical at times — which has been made up by the offense becoming the first team since Wilt Chamberlain’s Warriors in 1962 to score at least 127 points in each of the first three games to kick off a season.

Don’t forget about Aaron Gordon, who opened the season with a 50-point outing against the Warriors and followed it up with another solid showing against Phoenix. His shooting regressed to the mean somewhat against Minnesota, but he still looks to be in the best form of his career.

It’s only October, so there’s lots of room for improvement to be had, but there’s something different in the air surrounding this Nuggets team than there was the last two seasons. They’re back in action on Wednesday when the New Orleans Pelicans come to town.
