Nuggets stay put near top in new NBA Power Rankings

The Denver Nuggets have officially wrapped up a four-game homestand in which they dominated every opponent that stepped foot inside of Ball Arena. The Kings, Heat, Warriors and Pacers all didn’t have an answer for Mile High Basketball, as the Nuggets won the four contests by a combined 58 points, good for an average of 14.5 per game.

Nikola Jokic looked sharp en route to winning Western Conference Player of the Week, Tim Hardaway Jr. continued to be a flamethrower off the bench, and the rest of the team operated like a well-oiled machine throughout the week to push the Nuggets’ record to 7-2. As a result, their spot at No. 2 in the latest NBA Power Rankings didn’t change.

Unless something out-of-the-blue happens, Oklahoma City is going to stay at No. 1 for the foreseeable future. They’re the defending champions, they’ve only dropped one game and are looking even more dominant than they were a season ago.

There’s a lot to be happy about for Nuggets Nation. Denver is the only team that hasn’t trailed after the first quarter in any game, they’re 6-0 at Ball Arena and no game has been close, Nikola Jokic is averaging a triple double on 64% shooting from the field, and they’re winning games by an average of at least 18 points per game. Better yet, Cam Johnson and Christian Braun have struggled to find a rhythm on offense, so when those two finally are able to click in the starting five alongside Jokic, Jamal Murray and Aaron Gordon, this team could hit an even higher level.

For other teams in the Western Conference, the Houston Rockets are right on the Nuggets’ tail at No. 3. They host Denver on Nov. 21 in an NBA Cup clash, a game that will be very important in determining who makes the elimination stage of the tournament. The Los Angeles Lakers are No. 6 — even without LeBron James — as Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves have been solid en route to a 7-3 start. Victor Wembanyama and the San Antonio Spurs are No. 7, while the Minnesota Timberwolves are No. 10.

The Western Conference is deeper than the East, just like it’s been in previous years. The majority of the star power is in Denver’s conference, and there’s plenty more teams that have a realistic shot of winning the championship out in the Wild West, which these early power rankings reflect.

Denver is kicking off a three game road trip on Tuesday night in hopes of at least keeping their second spot on the list. They travel to Sacramento to take on the Kings before heading down to Los Angeles to take on the Clippers on a back-to-back. After that, they head east for a Saturday night duel against their favorite opponent, the Minnesota Timberwolves.
