Nikola Jokic adds to list of accolades following stellar week

The Denver Nuggets are on a roll, thanks in large part to another dominant start to the season by Nikola Jokic. The three-time MVP picked up right where he left off a season ago and has led the Nuggets to a 7-2 record while making light work of any defender standing in front of him.

The Serbian superstar led the Nuggets to a 4-0 record last week, and averaged 31.3 points, 11.3 rebounds and 13.3 assists per game in the process. He was named as the Western Conference Player of the Week for Week 3 because of his outstanding efforts.

None of the four games the Nuggets played, all at Ball Arena, were particularly close. They won the four contests by a combined 58 points, with the closest margin being a six point win over the Kings last Monday. Even though the final score read 130-124, that game was never in jeopardy, as the Nuggets were up 13 with just over three minutes remaining when they let off the gas pedal somewhat. No one inside the arena was ever concerned that Denver was going to let that game slip out of their grasp.

Jokic had two triple doubles (Miami and Indiana) and another double-double (Sacramento) in the four contests. Even though he didn’t get a double-double against Golden State, he still put up 26 points, nine rebounds and nine assists in just 28 minutes, his season low. He was a +16 when on the floor and sat the entire fourth quarter because the Nuggets were winning by so much.

This is the first time this season that Jokic has been named Player of the Week, and the 18th time in his career. This honor is just another bullet point on the laundry list of notable awards and honors he’s received throughout his time in Denver.

He also joins Avalanche superstar Nathan Mackinnon, as the Mack Attack was named as the NHL’s First Star of the Week for his dominant efforts on the ice a week ago. They’re both off to blistering starts this season, and Denver sports fans are hoping their efforts could potentially lead to two parades in the Mile High City.

Jokic and the Nuggets hit the road on Tuesday night to kick off a three-game road trip against the Kings. They play a back-to-back against the Clippers on Wednesday night before flying east to take on the Timberwolves on Saturday night.
