Former Nuggets guard arrested in Castle Rock for alleged shoplifting

Former Denver Nuggets guard Ty Lawson was arrested in Castle Rock on July 16 after allegedly stealing a bottle of Tito’s vodka from a local store. According to an affidavit obtained by KDVR, the store owner told police she witnessed Lawson walk out without paying for the bottle.

He was then seen taking a drink of the vodka right outside the store before walking to a nearby restaurant, where he sat down at the bar with the stolen alcohol. Officers arrived at the restaurant and identified the man as Tywon Lawson. The arresting officer noted that Lawson smelled of alcohol, and the store owner who reported the incident stated she had seen him stumbling, possibly from intoxication.

Lawson was booked into Douglas County jail on a shoplifting charge. He is facing a theft charge of less than $300.

The former University of North Carolina star was once one of the fastest point guards in the NBA. The Nuggets acquired Lawson via a draft-night trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves in 2009, and he went on to spend six seasons in Denver.

During that stretch, he received votes for Sixth Man of the Year during the 2010-11 season and Most Valuable Player votes during the 2012-13 season, the peak of his career. Lawson was traded to the Houston Rockets in 2015 and bounced around the league before his last NBA action came as a member of the Washington Wizards in 2018. He last played professionally in Venezuela in 2023.
