Nuggets to face shorthanded Timberwolves on Monday — and potentially again in November

The Denver Nuggets will be facing a shorthanded Minnesota Timberwolves team on Monday night, as it was announced that Anthony Edwards would miss the next two weeks with a hamstring injury

The Denver Nuggets have been one of the Western Conference’s best teams since the start of the 2022-23 season. They’ve won at least 32 games against West opponents in each of the last three seasons, something that no other team in the conference has accomplished. Over in the East, only the Celtics and Knicks have done the same in their conference.

Despite the year-after-year success in the West, one team has seemed to always have Denver’s number, the Minnesota Timberwolves. With Anthony Edwards leading the way and a gourd of talented role players surrounding him, it’s been a bad matchup for the Nuggets ever since they won the championship. The Wolves swept the regular season series 4-0 last year, defeated the Nuggets in seven games in the Western Conference Semifinals in 2024, and tied the 2023-24 season series 2-2. If there’s been one singular kryptonite for this Nuggets squad, it’s Minnesota.

The first meeting of the season between the division foes is set for Monday night, but the Timberwolves will be shorthanded, as it was announced on Monday that Edwards would miss at least the next two weeks with a right hamstring strain. He suffered the injury in Sunday’s 114-110 win over the Indiana Pacers after playing just over three minutes.

ESPN’s Shams Charania was the first with the news. His report simply said two weeks, which would put him in line to be back in the lineup when the teams meet again in Minneapolis on Nov. 15, but the timing will be close. If there’s any setback in his recovery, or if it takes longer to heal than two weeks, or if the Wolves air on the side of caution, there’s a chance he could miss that contest as well.

Last season, Edwards averaged 31.5 points, 4.8 rebounds and 6.8 assists per game in the four games against the Nuggets while shooting over 50% from the field and over 40% from 3-point range. They struggled to find an answer for him, but will not need one when they take the floor Monday night.

However, this opens the door for Bones Hyland to get some more minutes, a name that Nuggets fans might not have heard in quite some time. He played a season-high 19 minutes against the Pacers in the wake of Edwards’ injury. Some fans love him, some fans don’t, but all fans will be able to see him on the floor trying to get buckets on his former squad.
