A Nuggets trade proposal that sacrifices talent for financial flexibility

A mock deal sending Aaron Gordon and Cam Johnson to Detroit doesn't return equal value, but the $29 million in savings could unlock Denver's offseason

The Denver Nuggets are staring down a long offseason after a first-round playoff exit. And the questions facing the franchise have very little to do with whether changes are coming.

They have to do with how big those changes will be. And twhether the front office is willing to sacrifice short-term talent for long-term flexibility.

On a Thursday edition of “Dover and Cecil” on 104.3 The Fan, host Josh Dover floated a mock trade designed to do exactly that. The proposal sends Aaron Gordon and Cam Johnson to the Detroit Pistons in exchange for Isaiah Stewart and Caris LeVert.

On its face, the deal does not return equal value. But Dover wasn’t pitching the trade on the strength of the names coming back. He was pitching it on the strength of the financial picture it creates.

Dover started by mapping out the sell to Detroit.

“You’d sell the Pistons on ‘Hey, Aaron’s a champion, Aaron’s a vet, he gets to teach your guys how to do all of this,'” he said.

The Pistons are still constructing their identity, and adding a veteran like Gordon, who has been in the championship trenches and knows what winning at the highest level requires, has obvious appeal.

The complementary piece sweetens the offer further.

“You also send them Cam to give them that shooter again that they’ve missed the last couple of years,” Dover said.

Johnson’s outside shooting would address a long-standing need in Detroit, making the package one that could realistically get the Pistons to the table.

Dover didn’t pretend the deal was clean from a Denver perspective. He acknowledged the emotional and basketball cost up front.

“So Aaron and Cam are gone. Aaron, I know it hurts, Cam, thanks for the time,” he said. “It’s definitely not the same return. It’s not Aaron Gordon and Cam Johnson. But it’s Isaiah Stewart and Caris LeVert.”

That’s where the conversation pivots from talent to dollars. The trade isn’t about getting better immediately. It’s about creating the financial breathing room to address the roster more comprehensively.

“You know how much money the Nuggets save in one year by that deal? $29 million,” Dover said.

That figure changes everything. It opens doors that are currently bolted shut.

“Sign Peyton Watson for $22 million. Then, you have $7 million dollars more to go get you a backup big because Big Val’s gonna leave,” Dover said.

That’s the full vision. Retain a rising young wing in Watson. Replace the likely to depart depth at center. And do it all without triggering the punitive consequences that come with operating deep in the luxury tax.

The trade itself looks lopsided on paper. The blueprint it enables, however, may be the most realistic path back to contention Denver has available.
