Report: Colorado Rockies hire Bud Black as next manager

The Colorado Rockies appear to have its next manager, and it’s a familiar face.

Former San Diego Padres skipper Bud Black will be the Rockies manager, according to Denver 7 Broncos Insider Troy Renck.

The position has been open since Walt Weiss announced he would be stepping down as the team’s manager a day after the end of the 2016 season on Oct. 3.

Weiss had been the team’s coach for four seasons, tallying a 283-356 record for the worst winning percentage in franchise history.

Denver Post Rockies beat writer Patrick Saunders told 104.3 The Fan at the time that the split was “inevitable” due to a rift between Weiss and the front office.

Black spent his first nine seasons as a manager with the Padres before being let go in 2015.

With San Diego, Black had two winning seasons (2007 and 2010) and amassed 649 wins with a .477 winning percent.

During the 2010 season, Black led the Padres to 90 wins on the way to a National League Manager of the Year honor.

However, in both of Black’s winning seasons San Diego missed the playoffs, finishing one game back from the San Francisco Giants in the wild card in 2010 and losing in a play-in game to the Rockies in 2007.
