Rockies strike out 15 times and just one player gets a hit as they absorb shutout

Rockies Report, Game 13:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: The Colorado Rockies had no margin for error on Friday night, so it took one minor miscue for the deluge to be upon them in an 8-0 flogging at the hands of the San Diego Padres.

Trailing 1-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning with Jose Iglesias on first base and facing Jason Hayward, Germán Márquez appeared to have limited the damage by forcing a 1-6-3 double play to clear the bases.

But Hunter Goodman’s glove caught Heyward’s bat in its backswing — clear catcher’s interference.

“That was a backbreaker for sure,” manager Bud Black said in postgame video shared on the Rockies.TV broadcast,

Heyward took his base; Iglesias went to second. One pitch later, Brandon Lockridge sacrificed the runners forward 90 feet apiece; four pitches after that, former Colorado catcher Elias Díaz — the 2023 All-Star Game MVP — laced a 2-1 Márquez sinker up the middle.

That scored Iglesias and Heyward, and the floodgates opened.

“They just kept pecking away at us,” Black said, per Rockies.TV. “… It was a tough inning, in a number of ways.”

The lineup that exploded in the eighth inning Thursday had no punch Friday night; Colorado batters struck out 15 times as San Diego starter Nick Pivetta annihilated them, dropping the Rox to 3-10.

STARTER’S REPORT: Germán Márquez didn’t have to deal with the cold as he did last Saturday, but the catcher’s interference hastened the unraveling as he didn’t make it out of the fifth inning in a 72-pitch night that saw him take his second loss of the season.

Márquez was perfect through two innings and faced two over the minimum through four innings before everything came apart in the fifth. Six runs were charged to Márquez; five were earned.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Díaz brought home Iglesias and Heyward in the fifth.


ROCKIES NUMBER TO NOTE: 1 — Number of Rockies to get a hit on Friday. Kyle Farmer, working from the No. 2 spot in the lineup, had all three Colorado hits. The rest of the lineup went 0-for-26.

NOTABLE: Brenton Doyle was held out of the lineup due to a right quadriceps issue, according to the Rockies’ radio broadcast. Zac Veen led off and went 0-for-4, while Mickey Moniak patrolled center field … Shortstop Ezequiel Tovar was back in the lineup after getting a rest day Thursday to deal with a hip issue.

ROCKIES UNIFORM: Black hat with purple bill, purple jersey and gray pants. Colorado fell to 1-4 in this uniform.

WHAT’S NEXT: Chase Dollander returns to the mound for his second career start in the second game of the series. San Diego will counter with left-hander Kyle Hart on Saturday night, with a first pitch scheduled for 6:40 p.m. MDT.
