Rockies’ spending spree continues as team extends McMahon for $70M

All of the sudden, the Colorado Rockies are spending big money.

After inking former MVP Kris Bryant to a free agent deal last week worth $182M, the team dished out another big contract on Monday afternoon. This time the deal is to keep one of their own in Colorado for a long time.

Versatile infielder Ryan McMahon and the Colorado Rockies are in agreement on a six-year, $70 million contract extension, sources familiar with deal tell ESPN. McMahon, 27, took a leap forward defensively in 2021 and has enough thunder in his bat for Colorado to commit long-term.

McMahon has played parts of five seasons with the Rockies, making his MLB debut in 2017. He’s a career .243 hitter with 61 home runs and 215 RBI. Last year McMahon played in 151 games, batting .254 with 23 home runs and 86 RBI.

He primarily projects to play third base, as he did in 113 games a season ago. All his other defensive stints were at second base.

By paying Bryant and McMahon, fans have to wonder why the team couldn’t hold on to Nolan Arenado and Trevor Story. It appears money wasn’t the primary issue, but more so the fact neither player wanted to be here.

Arenado was traded to the Cardinals last offseason and Story signed a lucrative deal with the Boston Red Sox over the weekend.
