For Rockies’ Lorenzen, struggles continue — this time, on the road

Rockies Report, Game 53:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: The Rockies’ team-wide streak of seven-consecutive games without a home run end when TJ Rumfield delivered an eighth-inning leadoff shot over the left-field fence off Arizona reliever Brandon Pfaadt, but that could only pull the Rockies within 5-4 as they squandered a subsequent two-on, no-out situation in the eighth and went down 1-2-3 in the ninth, leaving that score as the final margin Saturday night at Chase Field.

Hunter Goodman continued rebounding from a recent slump with his second-consecutive two-hit night, but at the plate, the Rockies’ night was defined by missed opportunities, as they went 1-for-9 with runners in scoring position. Arizona wasn’t much better, going 2-for-11, but in a one-run game, that was the difference.

All of Arizona’s runs came at the expense of starter Michael Lorenzen. The Rockies got 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief work from Keegan Thompson in his Colorado debut, with Seth Halvorsen closing out the eighth inning by striking out Corbin Carroll with Ketel Marte on base to keep the margin at one run.

But Marte did plenty of damage earlier over the course of a 3-for-4 night, delivering a 2-run homer in the fourth and scoring in the third inning when Nolan Arenado brought him home with a 2-out, 2-RBI double.

“He’s probably the one guy I didn’t pitch super well today, and he’s hot right now,” Rockies starter Michael Lorenzen told media regarding Marte, who reached base all three times they dueled Saturday.

Colorado fell to 20-33.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Road-home splits have been the story of Lorenzen’s season, as he entered this road trip with a 10.03 ERA in five Coors Field starts. So, this game represented a chance for a rebound. But it didn’t work out that way.

Lorenzen escaped from trouble in the first inning after Marte and Corbin Carroll led off the Diamondbacks’ night with a single and double, respectively. But after a clean second inning, Lorenzen surrendered a single to Ryan Waldschmidt and walked Marte, opening the gates for a 3-run inning. Marte fired his afore-mentioned blast one inning later.

Lorenzen allowed eight hits and a walk over his 94-pitch, 5-inning night.

“Not too happy about it. I feel like I did everything right to put myself in a situation to have a good start. I feel like I did everything well — other than the thing that matters most, and that’s run production,” Lorenzen said to media in the locker room after the game.

“If you told me I threw 75 percent strikes with the stuff I had today and the curveball I had, I’d be shocked if I gave up 5,” he added.

But Lorenzen did, and he absorbed a major-league leading seventh loss this season. His 7.21 ERA is also the worst among 76 qualified pitchers.

“I don’t know if I’ve ever had a seven-and-a-half ERA. It’s probably the toughest stretch of my career,” he said.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: They went down in order in the ninth inning, dropping them to 6-9 in one-run games this season.

WHAT’S NEXT: Jose Quintana will head to the mound to try and salvage a split and stop the Rockies’ streak of seven-consecutive series defeats. Ryne Nelson will start for Arizona; he’s gone at least 6 2/3 innings in each of his last three starts and has a 2.73 ERA this month. First pitch is at 2:10 p.m. MDT.
