Rockies lose 10th straight at home in excruciating fashion

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: The defeats just get more painful.

After leaving Atlanta with a pair of one-run defeats to cap a 2-5 road trip, Orioles center fielder Colton Cowser literally pulled a Rockies win back from over the fence, reaching up to grab Jake McCarthy’s potential walk-off home run after it had cleared the center-field wall to complete a 2-1 defeat that was the Rockies’ franchise-record 10th-consecutive Coors Field loss.

“It’s like a dang knife to the heart. The boys played hard all game long,” Schaeffer said.

“… Three more inches, we win. But we lose. We lose. And we’re gonna come up tomorrow and try to win that ballgame.”

But in the meantime, Schaeffer was understandably upset at yet another narrow loss.

Cowser was also involved in what proved to be the game-winning run in the seventh, hustling down the first-base line in time to prevent an inning-ending, 4-6-3 double play. The Rox appeared to have turned the twin killing, but a replay reversal left Cowser safe at first base, allowing Coby Mayo to score.

But the real damage was done in that inning by four walks — two from Nick Frasso and two more via Mark Manfredi.

“Four walks in the seventh — not good, obviously,” Schaeffer said. “And then a tailor-made double play that’s not turned — I mean, Colton Cowser won the game for them, getting town the line for that run, and then obviously, that play at the end.”

Colorado fell to 52-86, capping a 9-19 August that is their second-worst full month of the season to date. Only their 8-20 ledger in May was worse, although the team also went 1-4 in March.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

The 98-minute rain delay hit at the worst possible time for Tanner Gordon, as it ended his night after five innings and just 60 pitches. Gordon had motored through the Orioles, holding them to three hits, a walk and a lone run that resulted from back-to-back doubles to lead off the fifth inning.

“I thought T.G., he stacked another good one on top of the last one,” Schaeffer said. “I thought he was really good. I thought he pounded the strike zone, spin was good, change-up was good, heater was good. Got ahead in counts. Did everything you want your starter to do.”

Except go as deep into the game as the Rox wanted, but that was no fault of Gordon’s. The rain delay was just another stroke of misfortune on a night — and in a portion of the season — when everything seems to be going against the Rox.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Cowser made the game-ending catch of a lifetime.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 1 — Number of Rockies wins in their last eight one-run games, including five such losses in a row — three of which have occurred in the last three days.
