Rockies falter in eighth inning, fall 2-1 to Braves

Rockies Report, Game 136:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Pressed into a bullpen game after Ryan Feltner fell ill, relievers Zach Agnos, Nick Frasso, Brennan Bernardino, Jimmy Herget and Jaden Hill shut out the National League East-leading Braves for 7 2/3 innings Saturday at Truist Park.

But with two outs in the eighth, Atlanta finally broke through at Hill’s expense when Michael Harris II doubled in a pair of runs with two outs in the eighth, dooming Colorado to a 2-1 loss in front of a sellout crowd on a typically steamy Atlanta afternoon and early evening.

The fateful eighth-inning Atlanta rally at the Rockies’ expense didn’t begin until after Hill retired Drake Baldwin and Ronald Acuña Jr., the Braves’ 1-2 hitters. Then Matt Olson and Mauricio Dubón kept Atlanta’s hopes in the frame alive with a pair of singles, placing them on the corners.

Hill then went 0-2 up on Harris before his slider lingered in the lower half of the strike zone, giving Harris an opportunity. He lined the ball to left center field. Cole Carrigg tracked it and made a lunging attempt, but the ball skipped off his glove and toward the wall.

Olson trotted home, while Dubón chugged toward third base and Harris rounded first. When Dubón was halfway there, left fielder Jordan Beck — who’d backed up Carrigg — prepared to throw. He had two options: Ezequiel Tovar as the cutoff man and Connor Norby at second.

Beck threw to Norby, but it was a tick too late; Harris slid into second base. Meanwhile, Dubón kept sprinting and scored without a throw just after Harris slid into second.

“There was a bang-bang play there,” manager Warren Schaeffer said, adding that Norby could have turned to throw home instead of attempting the tag.

In a game of little things that saw just two run-scoring swings of the bat, the combination of events proved fatal to the Rockies’ chances.

Colorado did not go gently, as is its won’t. Willi Castro — who earlier provided the Rockies’ lone run with a bases-loaded, RBI single off Martin Pérez in the sixth — drew a five-pitch leadoff walk, then reached second base on a Troy Johnston single.

But that was as close as the Rox came against Atlanta reliever Didier Fuentes, who was given the save opportunity in place of regular closer Raisel Iglesias. Fuentes — who twice reached over 99 MPH on his fastball — got Zac Veen to chase a high 99.6-MPH four-seamer for the second out, then won a six-pitch battle with Jake McCarthy, getting a harmless fly ball off his splitter to end the game.

“We battled all day,” a sullen Schaeffer told media after the game. “It’s just a shame, man. A shame. A shame.”

Colorado fell to 52-84, including a 2-4 mark on its current road trip. The Braves clinched their fifth-consecutive series win over Colorado.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Agnos got the first nod in the emergency bullpen game, and as he was earlier this season when called on to start at Arizona, he was effective, throwing 2 2/3 scoreless innings. In his first time through the order, he held Atlanta to a walk, but was relieved by Frasso after opening his second time through the Atlanta order by allowing singles to Baldwin and Acuña.

Frasso sealed Agnos’ scoreless day, then continued the bullpen’s outstanding day.

“I thought that they were awesome. Having to do that today, I thought that they were exceptional,” Schaeffer said. “Every guy left it all out there.”

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: McCarthy hit a fly ball for the 27th out.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 1.69 — Agnos’ ERA in three career major-league starts.

WHAT’S NEXT: Mason Adams will make his second Rox start, looking to build on his promising performance in Washington on Tuesday. Trade-deadline acquisition Tyler Mahle will get the call for Atlanta. First pitch is scheduled for 11:35 a.m. MDT.
