Rockies complete sweep as Freeland fires first career complete game

DENVER — Rockies Report, Game 112:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Seven days ago, Kyle Freeland was one of seven players named in a report detailing which Rockies were available in advance of Monday’s trade deadline. So, the Thomas Jefferson H.S. product stepped onto the mound at Coors Field on Sunday afternoon knowing this could be his last start in the uniform of his hometown team.

And if it was, he gave the hometown fans — 32,226 of them enduring triple-digit temperatures — something to savor: the first career complete game for the longtime Rockies mainstay, and the team’s first complete game in over four years, since Chad Kuhl on June 27, 2022.

Backed up by a six-run sixth inning that included a 2-RBI double from Brett Sullivan and a 3-run homer from Jake McCarthy, Freeland was able to relax, settle in and deliver perhaps the finest start of his career in Colorado’s 8-1 romp over the Kansas City Royals.

The emotional aftermath of Freeland’s 27th out demonstrated what he means within the clubhouse. Immediately after catcher Brett Sullivan embraced him just in front of home plate, Freeland received a hug from each of his teammates — the celebratory reward for a complete game that has been 10 seasons in the making.

As Freeland was dealing en route to completing his 115-pitch gem, the game remained taut headed in to the bottom of the sixth, with the Rockies leading 2-1. But while fatigue didn’t get the better of Freeland, it did fell Royals right-hander Seth Lugo, who allowed two singles and a walk to load the bases as his pitch count entered the 90s.

At that point, the Royals called on the struggling Aaron Bummer, who gave up a double to Sullivan, scoring two runs. Two batters later, Jake McCarthy clobbered a Bummer sinker into the right-field seats for a 3-run shot that allowed Freeland to continue aggressively attacking Kansas City batters.

“Putting up a big number like that for me [and] allowing me to free up out on the mound, it was great,” he said. “That way I can continue in my attack mode.”

Kansas City didn’t get to Freeland until the ninth inning with consecutive hits, but Freeland closed them out with two fly balls, leading to the emotional scenes after the game.

Colorado completed the sweep, its first since April 24-26 against the New York Mets, and improved to 45-67.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Adding to Freeland’s accomplishment was the layer of difficulty added by the soaring temperatures. The first-pitch temperature of 99 degrees was the second-hottest in Coors Field history; only the 100-degree reading against the Washington Nationals was warmer. The temperature rose into triple digits during the game.

“Definitely was feeling the heat,” Freeland said. “I was underneath the dugout. We had a bucket of ammonia on ice, had cold towels, had water, had everything we could to keep the body temperature down in between innings. But, yeah, the heat definitely played a factor, trying to minimize the amount of time out on the field, especially with the guys behind you, to get them off their feet and get back in the dugout and some shade and some cool.”

And that’s where Freeland’s uber-efficient work Sunday made an impact. Three of his innings saw him dust off the Royals in fewer than 10 pitches — six in the fourth, seven in the sixth and eight in the seventh. That was part of his run of 18 consecutive outs until Salvador Perez’s ninth-inning double.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 251 — Starts it took for Freeland to record his first career complete game. That leaves Edouardo Rodriguez as the only pitcher in major-league history to log at least 250 career starts without a complete game.
