Rockies drop series finale to Mariners, now just one loss from 100

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Hunter Goodman’s 39th home run of the season — a ninth-inning solo shot — represented the entirety of the Rox offense as they fell 2-1 in the series finale against the Seattle Mariners on Sunday afternoon.

A fourth inning RBI single from Dominic Canzone at the expense of Tomoyuki Sugano put the Mariners up to stay. It was the only hit Sugano allowed in five innings of work. Canzone followed that with an RBI double in the sixth to provide Seattle all the offense it needed, allowing the Mariners to take the series after splitting the first two games.

The teams combined for nine hits — five for the Rox and four for Seattle. Jake McCarthy had a one-out triple in the sixth, but Connor Norby and Goodman struck out, stranding McCarthy at third base.

The Rockies must now go undefeated in their final six games to avoid their fourth-consecutive 100-loss season. They haven’t had a winning streak of longer than four games since ripping off seven-consecutive wins from May 9-15 in the 2024 season.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Sugano didn’t get the win because of a paucity of run support, but after some ragged starts in recent weeks, he was able to get back on track in what is likely to be his penultimate start of the season, limiting the Mariners to a single run on one hit and two walks over five innings.

It was the first time in Sugano’s last nine starts that he had held an opponent to a single run. However, it wasn’t enough to avoid being saddled with the hard-luck loss, dropping his season-long ledger to 12-11.

Rockies manager Warren Schaeffer brought Ryan Feltner in to relieve Sugano, continuing the role of piggybacking a starter that he’s held in recent turns through the rotation. Feltner allowed a run on two hits, a walk and a hit batter over three innings of work.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Brett Sullivan struck out with two runners on base for the 27th out.

NUMBER TO NOTE: .640 — Goodman’s OPS this month, currently his lowest month-long figure of the season.

WHAT’S NEXT: After a Monday off-day, Kyle Freeland will make what could be his final Coors Field start, as his contract is up after this season. Arizona will counter with Michael Soroka for Tuesday night’s game, which has a scheduled first-pitch time of 6:40 p.m. MDT.
