Rockies drop sixth straight as Mets pummel them for 10 runs, 15 hits

DENVER — Rockies Report, Game 37:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Most of the noise at Coors Field during the Rockies’ 10-5 defeat Wednesday night came from the coterie of bundled-up New York rooters, mainly clustered along the third-base side, chanting “Let’s go Mets.”

But there weren’t many of them. On this frigid May evening, with first pitch postponed by six hours and 10 minutes because of the season’s most significant snowstorm along the Front Range, the Rockies announced their smallest-ever attendance for a game without pandemic capacity restrictions: 11,155.

That number came with a catch, as the Rockies allowed fans to exchange their tickets for other dates due to the weather wreaking havoc on the week’s schedule. None of the three games in the series was played at their scheduled times.

Those who did arrive saw the Mets jump out early against Colorado starter Michael Lorenzen, as Juan Soto went deep on him with a 435-foot blast to left-center field on the game’s third pitch.

The Rox accomplished nothing against Mets starter Freddy Peralta, who limited them to five hits and a walk over five shutout innings as the Mets built an 8-0 advantage heading into the bottom of the sixth.

But when Peralta passed the baton to reliever Tobias Myers, the Rockies began teeing off. TJ Rumfield ignited the outburst with a solo homer into the right-field seats, and Tyler Freeman and Troy Johnston immediately followed with consecutive doubles. Myers rallied to retire Kyle Karros and Ezequiel Tovar on pop-ups before Jake McCarthy smashed his first homer in a Colorado uniform, a 401-foot shot into the Rockies bullpen to pull Colorado within 8-4.

Mickey Moniak extended his streak of games with at least one hit to 18 games with a ninth-inning single before the night concluded. That started a Rockies rally; he was the first of four-consecutive Colorado batters to reach base.

Colorado fell to 14-23 and is now 0-5 on this current homestand.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

It went askew from the start for Lorenzen, who yielded the homer to Soto on his third pitch, didn’t have a clean inning and ultimately surrendered 11 hits and three walks before giving way to Zach Agnos after allowing two singles and a double without logging an out in the sixth inning.

“Good pitch mix, it’s just that they were on him,” manager Warren Schaeffer said. “When he threw it over the plate, they put the ball in play — whether hard sometimes, or not. They made him work.”

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Marcus Semien sent a two-run homer to the left-field stands in the ninth inning, pushing the Mets’ advantage to the final margin.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 8.20 — Colorado’s staff ERA during this homestand. Prior to the last five games, its home ERA this season was 4.62.

WHAT’S NEXT: The game postponed from Tuesday — which is now the Thursday getaway-day game. Jose Quintana starts for the Rox; Christian Scott gets the call for the Mets. First pitch is at 1:10 p.m. MDT.
