Rockies expect to call up potential third baseman of future after quick rise through system

The Rockies might be stepping into their long-term future at third base on Friday night in Phoenix.

Kyle Karros — the son of long-time major-leaguer and 1992 NL Rookie of the Year Eric Karros, who had 284 home runs and 1,724 hits over a 13-year career spent mostly with the Los Angeles Dodgers — will make his MLB debut Friday after receiving a call-up after just 16 games in AAA Albuquerque.

The No. 8 prospect in the Rockies’ system per MLB Pipeline, Karros was drafted by the Rox in the fifth round of the 2023 MLB Draft out of UCLA.

KARROS ROCKETED THROUGH ROCKIES SYSTEM

Karros’ brief stint in Albuquerque — where he logged a 306/.368/.500 line — followed a 55-game stint with AAA Hartford. His .861 OPS was nearly identical to the .868 OPS he had in Albuquerque, and followed a 2024 campaign that saw him post a .875 OPS at high-A Spokane.

Karros’ consistency moving up the Rockies’ minor-league chain gives the Rox confidence that his skills can translate as they give him opportunities on the hot corner in the wake of the recent trade of McMahon to the New York Yankees.

He will become the third member of Colorado’s 2023 draft class to make it to the major leagues this season, joining starter Chase Dollander and reliever Seth Halvorsen. Dollander was optioned to Albuquerque last month.
