Rockies absorb loss No. 70, fall in Boston

Rockies Report, Game 91:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Seven extra-base hits — including three home runs — allowed the Boston Red Sox to pull away for a 9-3 series-opening win over the Rockies at Fenway Park on Monday night.

Romy Gonzalez delivered a triple and a home run, with the former kick-starting a two-run fifth inning that extended Boston’s lead to 5-1 and chased Colorado starter Austin Gomber, who was relieved after 4 2/3 innings when he allowed the triple to Gonzalez, a Roman Anthony home run and a Rob Refsnyder single in succession.

The Rox scored once in the second inning on a Brenton Doyle RBI single and burst to life in the sixth inning with a two-out rally. Four consecutive Rockies reached base, with Michael Toglia and McMahon providing the RBIs to whittle Boston’s edge to 5-3.

It was Toglia’s third RBI in two days after he’d posted none in his previous nine games, a stretch in which he hit .188 (6-for-32).

But the Red Sox squashed hopes of a comeback at the expense of Tyler Kinley and Ryan Rolison in the seventh and eighth innings.

Colorado is 21-70.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Gomber’s fifth start since returning from the injured list continued the pendulum-swing trend of his work since returning to the rotation on June 15.

He has yet to go more than five innings in any of his starts. In two of them he limited opponents to four or fewer hits — including his dazzling work at Atlanta his first time out. But in the other starts — against Arizona and Houston at home and Monday in Boston — he yielded seven or more hits.

All-Star Hunter Goodman helped Gomber escape a spot of bother early, gunning down Nate Eaton at third base as he attempted a steal following a leadoff double in the first inning.

But there was no such relief one inning later, as a leadoff walk came back to haunt Gomber. A McMahon error put another runner on base, and consecutive doubles put three runs on the board and Colorado down to stay.

Gomber’s only clean inning was the third. He seemed on track to get through the fifth and perhaps reach the sixth inning for the first time this season, but Gonzalez’s triple ignited a Sox rally that torpedoed Gomber’s night.

The left-hander fell to 0-2.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Ceddanne Rafaela and Gonzalez went deep in the eighth inning, pushing Boston’s lead to the 9-3 final margin and squelching any realistic hopes of a ninth-inning rally.

NUMBER TO NOTE: .385 — Tyler Freeman’s average over 14 games in the leadoff role. He went 2-for-4 in that spot Monday night.
