Rockies drop series to White Sox, who lost 121 games last year

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: The Chicago White Sox knocked around Germán Márquez for six runs over six innings, powering them to a 10-3 win that clinched a series triumph over the Rockies on Saturday night.

This sealed a 15th series loss for the Rox at home this season. Colorado hasn’t won a series at Coors Field in 2025; its only two series wins came on the road last month — a sweep at Miami and in taking three out of four games at Washington.

This series loss is particularly frustrating, given that the White Sox last year finished with the worst record of the 162-game era — 41-121 — and entered the weekend with Major League Baseball’s second-worst record, on pace to finish 52-110.

But the Southsiders had claimed two of three series before being swept by the Los Angeles Dodgers last week, and in the last two nights in front of a huge throng at Coors Field, they picked up where they left off before their frustrating three days at Chavez Ravine.

Bright spots for Colorado included leadoff hitter Tyler Freeman, who went 3-for-4 with a walk and two doubles, and rookie Yanquiel Fernandez, who had his first two-hit night and boosted his average to .300.

Brenton Doyle checked in as a pinch hitter in the eighth inning and blasted a 431-foot home run deep into the left-field stands, although that merely narrowed the deficit to 8-3.

A two-run Michael A. Taylor shot in the ninth padded Chicago’s lead before the postgame fireworks show.

The Rox fell to 20-69. Since winning four in a row in mid-June, they’ve dropped 12 of 15 games.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

It got away quickly from Márquez. who allowed a pair of doubles and a triple before many of the 47,351 had settled into their seats. Chicago took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on that trio of extra-base hits.

Freeman, Hunter Goodman and Jordan Beck were able to pick up Márquez and square matters in the bottom of the first, but yet another double — an Austin Slater leadoff line drive to left field — opened the second inning, leading the way to a three-run inning capped by Lenyn Sosa’s two-run homer into the bullpen that put Chicago in front to stay.

But thanks to a pair of double plays, Márquez limited the damage after that, yielding just one run in the next four innings to make it through six full innings. He took the loss — his 10th — and gave up 11 hits and a walk while allowing six runs, all earned. But he saved the bullpen.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Taylor drilled a two-run homer 464 feet into the Colorado bullpen in the ninth inning, ending any faint chance of a Rockies ninth-inning rally.

NUMBER TO NOTE: .032 — Colorado’s winning percentage in home games this season that are not series finales. The Rox are 8-6 in in home series finales, but 1-30 in all other home games, including Saturday’s defeat.
