Rockies undone by rare Toglia errors as late rally against Dodgers falls short

Rockies Report, Game 79:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: An eighth-inning rally was only enough to bring the Rockies within one run, which wasn’t enough to overturn what had been a six-run deficit in a 9-7 loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers at Coors Field on Tuesday night.

With two outs in the eighth and Colorado trailing 8-4, Ryan Ritter started the revival with a double. Tyler Freeman brought him home with a line-drive double to the right-field corner. Hunter Goodman walked, and then Jordan Beck brought Goodman and Freeman around with a line-drive shot down the left-field line.

But that was as close as Colorado drew. Toscar Hernández tacked another run onto Los Angeles’ tally in the ninth, doubling home Max Muncy.

The mountain Colorado had to climb was steepened by one of their bugaboos of this frustrating season — errors, which caused an early 2-0 Rockies lead to unravel in the fourth inning.

That’s when the normally dependable glove of Michael Toglia came undone. He entered Tuesday with just one error in 60 games at first base this season.

He had two in the fourth inning alone.

The first came when a Freddie Freeman ground ball skipped wide of his glove. The second was when a Tommy Edman grounder whistled between his legs.

Among the batters in between the two errors was Los Angeles’ Andy Pages, who hit a sharp grounder to Toglia, who fired to Goodman in an attempt to throw Will Smith out at the plate. But Toglia’s throw was wide and up the third-base line, allowing Smith to score and Pages to reach base.

Interim manager Warren Schaeffer felt Toglia made the right decision to throw toward home.

“If it’s a good throw, he’s out, so, yes,” Schaeffer said.

Smith’s run tied the game at 2-apiece, and left Los Angeles with just one out. Three pitches later, it was 5-2 after Michael Conforto walloped a Germán Márquez curveball 420 feet into the right-field stands.

Then, Edman reached base, Shohei Ohtani whiffed for the second out of the inning, and Mookie Betts doubled Edman home for the sixth and final run of the inning. Los Angeles tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning at Ryan Rolison’s expense.

“I don’t know if we should have won. If you make errors and give them extra outs, you probably shouldn’t win,” Schaeffer said at his post-game press conference. “… But I thought we didn’t quit.”

Toglia was an example of that. He doubled in his next at-bat, part of a 3-for-5 night — with all three hits being doubles — that kept him rolling since his return to the major-league roster; he has a .303/.343/.667 line since his June 16 call-up from AAA Albuquerque.

But it wasn’t enough to keep the Rox from falling to 18-61.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Márquez picked up where he left off in his recent starts, neutralizing the Dodgers in the first three innings. But Toglia’s outlier inning in the field helped unravel matters in the fourth inning, and when he tweaked his ankle late in the frame, his night was done after 68 pitches.

“I think he’s fine. He rolled his ankle out there, but it did contribute to removing him from the game, especially after a 30-pitch inning,” Schaeffer said.

Márquez told reporters after the game that the ankle didn’t feel bad. He fell to 3-9.

But in pitch count, it was his shortest start since his last outing against the Dodgers, an April 16 appearance in which he lasted just 37 pitches and two-thirds of an inning.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Brenton Doyle grounded into a 6-4-3 double play for the final two outs.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 10 — Hits from the top four spots in the order, as Freeman, Goodman, Beck and Toglia combined to go 10-for-19 on Tuesday. The bottom three spots — Doyle, Kyle Farmer and Ritter — went a collective 1-for-12.
