Rockies finally get something to shout about as they earn 10th win

Rockies Report, Game 60:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Hunter Goodman took it upon himself to fix the mess that he had a part in creating.

In the bottom of the first inning, a ball that went between his legs resulted in Xavier Edwards scoring from third base and helped launch the Miami Marlins to a three-run inning that put Colorado in a 3-1 hole.

But in the bottom of the second inning, he tagged Jesús Sánchez out at home plate after receiving an accurate throw from Brenton Doyle, allowing Colorado to escape from that frame with only one more run on the board.

The Marlins had four runs at that point.

They would score no more.

And Goodman crushed a pair of Max Meyer offerings over the center-field fence — one a solo shot, another a two-run blast — to provide the jolts to power Colorado to a 6-4 win that snapped an eight-game losing streak.

The Rockies are 10-50. But they’re 1-1 in June.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Germán Márquez found himself in trouble early — some of it exacerbated by Goodman’s error, a common problem for Rockies pitchers whose struggles have been heightened by defensive mishaps throughout the season.

But after allowing a leadoff double to Miami’s Kyle Stowers in the third inning — making him the eighth Marlin to reach base to that point, and the fourth via a double — Márquez was able to escape trouble, although he didn’t escape extra-base hits.

Six of the nine hits Márquez allowed were doubles. But in the third and fifth innings, he yielded no further advancement. His curveball got him the strikeouts that escaped him from both frames.

“When the going got tough for him tonight, he made his best pitches,” Rockies interim manger Warren Schaeffer said after the game. “… He just dug deep. I don’t know what to tell you other than that.”

Ultimately credited with the win, Márquez improved to 2-7.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Closer Zach Agnos got Kyle Stowers to ground into a 4-6-3 double play for the final two outs. It was Agnos’ fourth save of the season.


ROCKIES NUMBER TO NOTE: 3 — Hits for second baseman Thairo Estrada, who is hitting a crisp .364 since returning from the 60-day injured list.

WHAT’S NEXT: Chase Dollander is expected to return from the injured list and start Tuesday. Miami will counter with former Cy Young Award winner Sandy Alcantara, who has allowed more earned runs than any other pitcher in MLB with 48.
