Rockies hit Memorial Day with dreadful single-digit win total after dropping 20th consecutive series

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Memorial Day will arrive with the Rockies sitting with a single-digit win total.

That sentence is unfathomable unless it’s a season with a work stoppage. But it’s the Colorado Rockies’ reality, sealed by a rain-delayed, 5-4 defeat to the New York Yankees.

The setback not only dropped the Rox to 9-44, it sealed their 20th consecutive series loss dating back to last September.

A balanced effort from the offense wasn’t enough to get Colorado into double digits in the win column.

Eight of nine Colorado players who started reached base, with Jordan Beck, Hunter Goodman, Brenton Doyle and Michael Toglia doing so twice apiece.

Mickey Moniak’s ninth-inning home run brought the Rox within one run and made it interesting, but Goodman couldn’t cash in with two runners on, capping a day that saw Colorado go 1-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Antonio Senzatela kept the ball in the park, but he couldn’t keep the Rockies out of trouble, and absorbed a major-league-leading ninth loss in 11 starts so far this season.

No other pitcher in MLB has more than seven losses to his name. Senzatela is just two defeats off his career high — one day before Memorial Day.

Matters got away from Senzatela in the fifth inning. He ran a 3-2 count to Paul Goldschmidt just before allowing a single to left field, then walked Ben Rice on four pitches, leading Warren Schaeffer to call for Jake Bird.

Bird allowed both inherited runners to score via an Aaron Judge double down the third-base line and a sacrifice fly to deep center field, leaving Senzatela with four runs — all earned — over 4 1/3 innings.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Goodman hit a dribbler back to Yankees closer Luke Weaver for the final out with runners on first and second, leaving the tying and winning runs on base.

ROCKIES NUMBER TO NOTE: 2 – Walks for Toglia on Sunday, matching his total from his previous 43 plate appearances. He returned to the lineup Saturday and went 1-for-6 with a triple and two walks over the weekend, good for an .875 OPS.

It’s a small sample size, but you look for progress where you can find it — although he still struck out three times in eight plate appearances.
