Rockies get first back-to-back wins of season as Hunter Goodman comes through

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: The Rockies have a winning streak.

An eighth-inning rally capped by Hunter Goodman’s RBI single gave Colorado a 4-3 win over San Francisco on Thursday night and their first consecutive wins of the season.

With that, a 13-game road losing streak that began March 30 at Tampa Bay and a 12-game skid at Oracle Park ended. Colorado improved to 6-25.

Goodman was the hero of the night at the plate and behind it. Not only did he notch the game-winning RBI on a single to left field in the top of the eighth inning, but he gunned down Giants pinch runner Brett Wisely at second base for the second out in the bottom of the frame.

It proved crucial as Mike Yastrzemski subsequently singled; Goodman’s precise dart saved a run and preserved the lead he created.

Zach Agnos, putative closer of the future, appears to be the closer of the present; he got the ninth-inning assignment for the second consecutive day and recorded his second consecutive save, retiring the Giants in order — including an unusual 1-to-3 out in which the ball deflected off his glove and toward first baseman Michael Toglia, who tagged first base for the out.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

It wasn’t until the sixth inning that the Giants accumulated much damage at Kyle Freeland’s expense, as a pair of extra-base hits brought home two runs, breaking what had been a 1-1 deadlock.

But despite leaving the mound after six innings with a 3-1 deficit, Freeland’s franchise-record-breaking 207th career start saw him find his footing, as he notched his first quality start in his last five appearances — and his third in seven starts so far this season.

Ryan McMahon and Jordan Beck took Freeland off the hook for the loss, with McMahon pulling the Rockies within one run in the seventh inning and Beck driving home Brenton Doyle with a line-drive double down the left-field line one inning later.

Freeland scattered seven hits and two walks over his six innings of work, going 91 pitches. The bullpen delivered three scoreless innings, with Angel Chivilli receiving credit for the win.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Agnos got Christian Koss to fly out to right field for the final out.

ROCKIES NUMBER TO NOTE: 35 — Number of at-bats without a hit for McMahon before he clubbed a 92-MPH Justin Verlander fastball 400 feet over the center-field wall for his third home run of the season.
