Rockies swept for 20th time this season, reach top five in MLB history in single-season losses

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Once again, the Rockies could do little to slow the steamrolling Mariners, as Eugenio Suárez’s two-run homer off Bradley Blalock in the second inning pushed Colorado to what would become a 6-2 defeat and a sweep at the hands of the American League West champions.

It marked the 20th time the Rockies have been swept this season and the fourth time in September. Sweeps touched every month of the Rockies’ season, as the first one at their expense — at Philadelphia early in the season — began on March 31.

Colorado trailed 6-0 before finally getting on the board on Ezequiel Tovar’s RBI single in the sixth inning. A potential rally petered out in the eighth.

Hunter Goodman knocked in his 90th run of the season with an RBI single in the ninth inning, scoring Kyle Karros to provide the final margin.

Second baseman Ryan Ritter delivered the first three-hit game of his major-league career.

Reliever Zach Agnos delivered a scoreless inning of relief in his first major-league work since July 26. He’d been on the injured list with a right-elbow flexor strain.

Colorado is 43-116.

The defeat guarantees that the Rockies will rank among the five clubs with the most losses in a single season in major-league history.

The four clubs in major-league history with more losses in a single season are the 1899 Cleveland Spiders (134), the 2024 Chicago White Sox (121), the 1962 New York Mets (120) and the 2003 Detroit Tigers (119).

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Blalock needed just eight pitches to retire the Mariners in order in the first inning, but when Josh Naylor delivered a leadoff single to right field in the second inning, the Mariners’ attack began.

The pitch Suárez deposited off of the second level of the left-field stands wasn’t a bad one — a slider at the bottom of the strike zone — but Suárez has punished plenty of offerings this year. That was his sixth homer at the Rockies’ expense this season; only the Atlanta Braves have been on the business end of more Suárez bombs.

The third run came home via an RBI groundout in the fourth inning, with the final two scoring when Ritter came up just short of a leaping grab of a Randy Arozarena line drive. The ball skipped off the edge of Ritter’s glove and into center field, pushing the Mariners’ lead to 5-0.

After an intentional walk of Cal Raleigh following a 2-1 count, interim manager Warren Schaeffer relived Blalock after 3 2/3 innings and 73 pitches. He fell to 2-6, ending the season with a 9.36 ERA and a 1.84 WHIP.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: The Rox came up scoreless in the eighth inning after Goodman and Crim opened the inning with a double and a walk, respectively.

NUMBER TO NOTE: .353 — Ritter’s average since Sept. 18, aided by his three-hit night Thursday.

WHAT’S NEXT: The Rox head down the Pacific coastline to conclude the season at San Francisco. Germán Márquez starts the series opener at Oracle Park; Trevor McDonald gets the nod for the Giants. The first pitch is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. MDT.
