Rockies get strong start from Márquez in what could be his last home game with team

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: In what was likely Germán Márquez’s final start at Coors Field in a Rockies uniform, the veteran starter allowed just two runs, four hits and a walk over seven innings in one of his finest starts of the season, but it wasn’t enough to prevent the Rockies from absorbing their 113th defeat of the season, this one by a 3-0 count to the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.

The loss ensures that the Rockies will finish with more defeats than any National League club since the 1962 New York Mets, who went 40-120 during their expansion season.

The 2025 Rockies now rank among the top-10 teams in major-league history in losses. They need to go 4-3 the rest of the way to avoid being among the top five teams all-time in defeats.

Colorado failed to sustain any rallies against Angels starter Kyle Hendricks, who limited the Rox to three hits — all singles — over seven innings of work. Until the ninth inning, the Rox had just two plate appearances with a runner in scoring position, resulting in an Ezequiel Tovar sacrifice bunt and a pop-fly double play.

The Rox sagged to 42-113 on the season and 3-15 in September. Colorado hasn’t had a multi-game winning streak since Aug. 15-18; since then, the team is 6-24, nearly matching its 5-25 mark in its opening 30 games.

Angels slugger Mike Trout also hit a career milestone, reaching the 400-homer mark with a solo shot in the eighth inning off Jaden Hill.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Márquez’s contract expires after this season, and with career-worst figures in ERA and WHIP — in seasons that have seen him record more than one appearance — he knew where things stood headed into Saturday night.

Understandably, feelings bubbled up within him as a decade’s worth of memories hit.

“It was very, very emotional,” Márquez said, via MLB.com. “It may have been the last game that I throw as a Rockie at Coors Field. I don’t know. I’ve got one more start.

“I was thinking about that the whole game. This is my home. I’ve been here for my whole career. I feel happy. I feel free here. But it’s baseball, and I need to see what’s going to happen.”

What happened Saturday was a night in which the only runs at his expense were via a pair of solo homers. Aside from that, he squelched the Angels, giving the Rox a chance to win. He earned the quality start, but suffered the undeserved loss — his 15th of the season against just three wins.

But for most of the last 10 seasons, Márquez was a rotation stalwart. An All-Star in 2021, never better than in a 2018 campaign when he helped the Rox to their most-recent postseason appearance, his legacy as one of the most consistent starters in club history is secure, no matter what comes next.
