Rockies get a Moniak homer for fourth-straight game but fall to 2-14 in September

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: As was the case Wednesday night, much of the damage started with two outs as the Miami Marlins built a 9-3 lead and held off the Rockies for a 9-7 win to finish off a sweep in front of 21,760 at Coors Field on Thursday afternoon.

The defeat continued the Rockies’ sorry September, which has seen them lose 14 of 16 games. Overall, they’ve lost 22 of their past 26 outings.

Colorado’s beleaguered bullpen continued its recent poor form, as Anthony Molina surrendered three runs — two earned — in two innings of work, and Ryan Rolison gave up a two-run homer to Heriberto Hernández in the ninth inning.

Hernández’s shot seemed relatively inconsequential at the time, but it proved to be decisive, as the Rox came alive in the bottom of the ninth. First baseman Blaine Crim led off with a homer — his third since being called up last week — and Yanquiel Fernández and Ryan Ritter lashed doubles before Mickey Moniak continued his recent sizzling streak with his fifth home run in the last four games, a mammoth 452-foot shot that drew the Rox within 9-7.

But that was as close as Colorado got.

Colorado is 41-112. With one more loss, the Rox will become the NL’s worst team since the 1962 New York Mets.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Tanner Gordon cruised through the first five batters he faced before a Kyle Karros error in the second inning pried open the door for a Miami rally; Gordon walked Troy Johnston and gave up a single to Dane Myers, putting the Marlins on the board.

One inning later, Liam Hicks and Otto Lopez crushed Gordon’s fastball, clubbing two homers in a three-pitch span to put the Marlins in front 4-2.

That would be all the Marlins accumulated at Gordon’s expense; eventually he retired the last seven Miami batters he faced, giving the Colorado bullpen a break by enduring through the sixth inning. But with the Rox unable to produce an outburst, Gordon took the loss and fell to 6-7.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Jordan Beck hit a grounder to reliever Calvin Faucher with Goodman on first base for the final out, ending the hopes for a miraculous Rockies comeback.

NUMBER TO NOTE: .988 — Crim’s OPS since entering Colorado’s lineup after he clubbed his third home run in six games Thursday.

WHAT’S NEXT: The final home series of the season begins with a fireworks game Friday night against the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim. Bradley Blalock gets the start for the Rox; Mitch Farris goes for the Angels. First pitch is at 6:10 p.m. MDT.
