Rockies’ quick 1-0 lead vanishes in Padres onslaught for loss No. 108

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: A 1-0 lead in the top of the first for the Rockies vanished in a hurry, as the San Diego Padres shelled fill-in starter Bradley Blalock and starter-turned-reliever Antonio Senzatela for nine-consecutive runs to run away with an 11-3 romp at Petco Park on Saturday night.

Jordan Beck’s RBI single brought home Tyler Freeman to nudge the Rox in front; Freeman led off the game with a double off San Diego’s Dylan Cease. But that would be the only run at Cease’s expense; he allowed just four baserunners over the rest of his six-inning appearance.

Meanwhile, the Padres teed off on Blalock and Senzatela. Home runs were the undoing for Blalock; Senzatela endured death by paper cuts in the fourth, allowing four-consecutive Padres to reach base, then yielding a 2-out, 2-RBI double.

Blaine Crim continued his hot streak after his Friday promotion, slashing a 2-RBI double in the eighth inning to add a smidgen of respectability to Colorado’s final output, but the Padres got those runs back in the bottom of the inning off reliever Angel Chivilli.

Colorado dropped to 41-108. The Rox are guaranteed to have the worst record in MLB this season by a minimum of three games.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Making the start in place of the injured Chase Dollander — whose season ended after he succumbed to a knee injury last Monday — Blalock found himself in trouble early and lasted just three innings before giving way to Senzatela after 69 pitches.

Blalock loaded the bases in the first inning and escaped with only one run yielded via a Ramón Laureano sacrifice fly. The rest of the damage came via the long ball — a two-run shot by Fernando Tatis Jr., who clubbed a high fastball over the right-center field wall to put the Padres in front 3-1, and a pair of solo shots from Manny Machado and Jackson Merrill, who punished pitches in the heart of the strike zone — with Machado launching a hanging curve over the left-center field wall.

For Blalock, homers have become a problem in recent starts; he’s allowed eight in his last four appearances after giving up four in his first six starts.

Blalock fell to 1-5.

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Laureano delivered a 2-RBI double in the fourth inning to push the Padres’ lead to 9-1.
