Rockies throttled in finale of long homestand

Rockies Report, Game 143:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: Manny Machado’s two-run homer in the top of the first off Tanner Gordon put the Padres in front for good as they cruised to an 8-1 romp over the Rockies to take a weekend series at Coors Field.

Machado’s 452-foot blast into the left-center field stands was the first of three home runs allowed by Gordon, who failed to find the rhythm he had in his previous three starts, when he went six innings each time.

The walloping capped a dreary 2-7 homestand for the Rockies, who have now dropped five consecutive series since splitting a four-game set with the Los Angeles Dodgers last month.

At one point, the Rockies won seven of nine games midway through August. But Los Angeles defeated the Rockies 9-5 to close out that previous homestand on Aug. 21, and that pushed the Rox into their current pit of misery, a 3-13 stretch that has seen them surrender at least seven runs eight times.

Ezequiel Tovar’s third-inning RBI drove home Orlando Arcia for Colorado’s only run of the day.

Colorado is 40-103.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Gordon came into Sunday with three-consecutive quality starts, but with a first-inning changeup to Machado that was parked into the stands, the day got away from him and he absorbed his sixth loss of the season.

He labored in throwing 91 pitches in just 3 2/3 innings. Remarkably, Gordon retired the leadoff batter in each inning, but found trouble quickly thereafter each time.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Luis Peralta surrendered a solo shot to Ramón Laureano to open up the fifth inning, knocking the Rockies further into the abyss. Another run that inning scored when Antonio Senzatela threw a wild pitch, providing the final margin.

NUMBER TO NOTE: 2.38 — Senzatela’s ERA in three appearances since his recent move to the bullpen. Although he had the wild pitch in the fifth inning, the run was credited to Peralta; Senzatela went 3 2/3 innings Sunday, allowing four hits and two walks, but no runs to his name.

WHAT’S NEXT: It’s off to Dodger Stadium, where Chase Dollander — who has found his groove on the road — will try and maintain that form away from Coors Field in the series opener Monday night. First pitch is at 8:10 p.m. MDT.
