Guardians deal Rockies, ill Freeland a 5-0 setback

Rockies Report, Game 108:

ROCKIES BOTTOM LINE: An ill Kyle Freeland made it through just three innings, but the two runs allowed at his expense were all the Guardians needed as they blanked the Rockies 5-0 to take the series Wednesday night.

The Rockies didn’t muster a hit until Tyler Freeman singled to lead off the fourth inning. Three singles were all they could manage as six Guardians pitchers collaborated to confound the Rox. Only one Colorado player even reached second base: Hunter Goodman in the seventh inning after a walk and a subsequent Warming Bernabel single.

Colorado fell to 28-80 and finished with a 2-4 record on its road trip, including four defeats in the last five games. The Rockies are now just two losses away from clinching a losing season.

ROCKIES STARTER’S REPORT

Freeland gutted through three innings, surrendering a two-run homer to David Fry in the first inning before retiring seven consecutive Guardians prior to being relieved after 40 pitches.

“He honestly gave us everything that he had in the tank,” interim manager Warren Schaeffer told reporters, as relayed via MLB.com. “Even sending him back out for the third was probably kind of pushing it.

“I mean, if he doesn’t go today, we can’t finish the game with the bullpen.”

Jaden Hill, Juan Mejia and Victor Vodnik worked the rest of the game. Hill and Mejia worked four scoreless innings before the Guardians finally got to Vodnik in the eighthin inning.

BITS AND PIECES

IT WAS DECIDED FOR THE ROCKIES WHEN: Kyle Manzardo and Carlos Santana delivered back-to-back RBI base hits — a single and a double, respectively — off reliever Victor Vodnik in the eighth inning to pad Cleveland’s edge to 5-0.

NUMBER TO NOTE: .389 — Warming Bernabel’s batting average during this road trip. He had one of Colorado’s three hits Wednesday and has recorded at least one hit in each of his five games in the lineup since being promoted from AAA Albuquerque.
