Kyle Freeland sets Rockies all-time record for most innings pitched

DENVER — Rockies pitcher Kyle Freeland is a survivor. And one out into the fifth inning Sunday afternoon at Coors Field, he hit the statistical milestone that confirmed that sentiment.

When he retired Milwaukee third baseman Luis Rengifo in the top of the fifth inning on a fly ball to center field that hung up in the breeze, he officially passed Aaron Cook for the Rockies record for innings pitched.

Cook held the mark with 1,312 1/3 innings, amassed over 10 seasons with the Rockies that began in 2002. He ended his decade in purple and black with a 4.60 ERA and a 76-79 record.

Umpire Junior Valentine stopped Sunday’s game to commemorate Freeland’s accomplishment, which elicited a standing ovation from the crowd. Freeland doffed his cap in appreciation. He allowed a walk to Blake Perkins and a two-out double to Jackson Chourio later that inning, but got a two-out grounder to escape the inning.

But Freeland lost his chance for the win in the sixth inning, opening the frame by allowing a leadoff single to William Contreras and an RBI double to Andrew Vaughn. At that point, Warren Schaeffer relieved Freeland for Jaden Hill, who promptly surrendered a home run to Milwaukee catcher Gary Sanchez on his first pitch.

FREELAND HIT THE ROCKIES RECORD IN THE MIDST OF A ROUGH START TO THE SEASON

The record was a bright spot in what has been a frustrating season for the Denver native and Thomas Jefferson H.S. product. He entered the game with an 8.06 ERA and a minus-1.0 WAR, carrying a 1-6 record in the process.

Freeland’s ERA dropped from 8.06 to 7.81 after giving up three earned runs in five innings, plus two batters in the sixth without logging an out.

Freeland hasn’t posted a sub-4.25 ERA since 2018, but he’s endured in the rotation. He carried a 4.97 career ERA at Coors Field into Sunday’s game, compared with 4.38 on the road.
