Rockies asking price for Hunter Goodman revealed

The Colorado Rockies are sellers ahead of Monday’s trade deadline, but will they get extreme enough to trade their two-time All-Star catcher with years of team control left?

It seems unlikely the Rockies trade Goodman, who is having a wonderful season. But if Colorado does move off its backstop, it will come at a huge cost, and Ken Rosenthal detailed that on Thursday.

Rosenthal reports that the Rockies have asked for multi-player packages headlined by each team’s No. 1 prospect, specifically naming Boston’s Franklin Arias and Tampa Bay’s Theo Gillen as the centerpieces Colorado expects in any Goodman offer.

The two — a shortstop from the Red Sox and an outfielder from the Rays — are among the top 10 prospects in all of baseball.

No, neither are pitchers. But both offer a glimpse at just how large the package would need to be for Goodman.

Arias, a 20-year-old Venezuelan shortstop ranked No. 7 on MLB Pipeline’s top-100 list, just got bumped to Triple-A Worcester last month after slashing .320 with 19 homers at Double-A Portland.

Gillen, the Rays’ 2024 first-rounder, hit .342 with 12 homers and 28 stolen bases at High-A Bowling Green before earning a recent promotion to Double-A Montgomery — all at 20 years old. He became the third minor leaguer this season to reach 15 homers and 30 steals.

The Yankees are lurking, too, which would put their top prospect, George Lombard Jr., in the crosshairs.

Other reports are out there expressing concerns about Goodman’s defense, which may only be coming to light to talk the price down. Still, Goodman has improved greatly on defense in his few years at the highest level.

Paul DePodesta and Josh Byrnes hold all the cards here, which is why the Rockies could demand such a package. It’s hard to know if this will even be the new front office’s first big decision because it could be a no brainer yes or no depending on how much teams really value Goodman.

At any rate, it’s going to cost a lot to move the 26-year-old star, but now we know what that a lot may look like. Maybe a Goodman trade doesn’t happen before Monday, in which case we’re still watching Mickey Moniak, Antonio Senzatela and Jake McCarthy.
