Rockies postpone Friday’s game for snow, now scheduled as a Sunday doubleheader

The Colorado Rockies were slated to begin a three-game series against the Washington Nationals on Friday night at Coors Field, but Mother Nature had other plans, as a snowy Friday in the Mile High City has caused the game to be postponed.

Tonight’s game has been postponed. It will be made up on Sunday at 6:10pm MDT as part of a split doubleheader.

Tomorrow’s start time has been delayed by an hour to 2:10pm MDT.

This game will now be played after the originally-scheduled Sunday afternoon game, and will also give fans a first look at the new City Connect uniforms the club is debuting this season. Saturday’s first pitch has also been moved back an hour to let the storm system clear out of Denver.

Chase Dollander was scheduled to make his third career start on Friday night. The Rockies have not announced whether he will pitch Saturday or if he will go in one of the two games on Sunday. The 23-year-old has posted a 5.06 ERA in 10.2 innings pitched.

For the Nationals, Mackenzie Gore was supposed to be on the bump for Friday’s tilt. There has been no announcement on the changes to the pitching schedule for them.

Having a game be postponed in mid-late April is nothing new for the Rockies, as spring snowstorms are a staple in Denver. The Rockies postponed a game on April 19 last year against the Seattle Mariners due to snow, and have averaged roughly one postponement in April or May per year dating back to 2013, per Casey Don. Friday’s postponement for the Rockies is just hitting the quota for the season.

Friday’s news also delays a new chapter of the 2025 season, as it was scheduled to be the first game with Clint Hurdle as the team’s hitting coach after Hensley Meulens was relieved of his duties on Thursday.

While the Rockies sit at 3-15 with the worst record in the MLB, the Nationals haven’t been playing much better baseball with a record of 7-12. If the snow clears in time on Saturday, the club will have it’s best chance in over a week to get back in the win column.
