Kyle Freeland to get Opening Day start for Rockies

Kyle Freeland will once again be the Colorado Rockies’ Opening Day starter.

Colorado manager Bud Black announced his choice Sunday, 12 days before the team begins its regular season at Tampa Bay. The move comes as no surprise, given Freeland’s consistency as well as his strong spring-training form to date.

This will be the fourth Opening Day start for Freeland and his third in succession.

In addition to his recent run of season-launching starts, he was also Colorado’s starter on Opening Day at Miami in 2019. In that outing, the 31-year-old Denver native tossed 7 innings of 2-hit ball in what would be a 6-3 Rockies win.

All parties involved hope that it goes better than it did last year, when the Arizona Diamondbacks shelled him on Opening Day for 10 earned runs in 2 2/3 innings of work. The barrage was part of a 14-run third-inning in a 16-1 shellacking.
