Rockies reinstate Estrada from IL, option Amador to Triple-A among other moves

The Colorado Rockies announced a handful of transactions on Friday, including the reinstatement of infielder Thairo Estrada from the 60-day IL

The Colorado Rockies announced a handful of roster transactions on Friday before beginning their series against the New York Mets in Queens, and one of the transactions is a move that will allow fans to see infielder Thairo Estrada in the purple and black for the first time.

The Rockies announced the following transactions today:

– Reinstated INF Thairo Estrada from the 60-day IL
– Selected the contract of OF Sam Hilliard (#16) from Triple-A Albuquerque
– Designated OF Nick Martini for assignment
– Optioned INF Adael Amador to Triple-A yesterday…

After beginning the season on the 60-day IL with a right wrist fracture he suffered back in spring training, Estrada should be able to make his debut in the Rockies lineup over the weekend. The 29-year old middle infielder was signed by the club in January to fill the hole left behind by second baseman Brendan Rodgers, but the fracture he suffered in the spring has delayed his debut to an infield that needs all the help they can get.

Estrada spent the last four years of his career with the San Francisco Giants with his best season coming in 2023, when he slashed .271/.315/.416. He set a career-high in hits (134) in 120 games while posting a .989 fielding percentage at second base.

The Rockies also selected Sam Hilliard’s contract on Friday, bringing him up to the big leagues for the foreseeable future. The outfielder, now in his seventh season in the big leagues, has spent six of the last seven years with the Rockies. He hasn’t hit over .239 from the plate since his first year back in 2019, and has a career fielding percentage of .990.

When two guys get called up, that means that two guys have to go, and the casualties from these transactions are Nick Martini (DFA’d) and Adael Amador (optioned). Martini, 34, has been an underwhelming addition for Colorado this season, especially considering the fact that the team selected his contract over Zac Veen’s back at the start of the season, not giving the youngster a chance to grow in the major leagues after a very strong performance in spring training.

Martini has slashed .225/.288/.294 this season with just five extra-base hits in 111 plate appearances.

Amador has also had a rough start to the season, with his most memorable play being when he threw his glove up in the air against the New York Yankees to try and knock down a line drive.

The 21-year-old has slashed .146/.240/.225 with a poor .975 fielding percentage in 33 games. He definitely can use a stint in the minor leagues to try and find his game.

Will these moves provide a spark to the 9-47 Rockies before they take on Juan Soto and the Mets this weekend? Maybe Estrada can bring some juice to one of the worst teams of all time, but it’s unlikely that his appearance will be enough to win a series against one of the best teams in the National League.
