Former second rounder debuts for Rockies on Tuesday, once ranked top 100 prospect

One of the Colorado Rockies top prospects is debuting Tuesday night against the Chicago Cubs, as Cole Carrigg has been called up and will bat seventh, playing center field at Coors Field.

The once 85th ranked prospect in all of the sport by Baseball America ahead of the 2025 season, has gotten off to a great start in Triple-A Albuquerque this year. In 257 plate appearances over 57 games he is slashing .338/.414/.529 with six homers and 30 stolen bases. The speedy switch-hitter plays all over the diamond, too. Mostly a centerfielder, he’s also played left field, right field, third base, shortstop, second base and has caught in pro ball.

“Over his three years at San Diego State, Carrigg showed off electric tools while touching every position on the diamond at least once between his time with the Aztecs and playing in summer leagues. After the Rockies took him No. 65 overall in the 2023 Draft, he began seeing time behind the plate, at shortstop and in center field while flashing a power-speed combination at the plate. He had a solid first full season with High-A Spokane, but things unraveled a bit with a move to Double-A, even as he still occasionally showed off his pop and wheels…

The conundrum with Carrigg has been how to allow him to keep the fire/aggression he plays with while helping learn to turn down the temperature just a little bit…Carrigg’s speed certainly plays, with 99 steals over the last two years, and his defensive assignments have been simplified by having him play the outfield exclusively in 2025, while still having him work out on the dirt not in games, and his double-plus arm racked up 18 assists last year. He’s an above-average defender in center, at least, one who has big league regular tools if he can find a little balance.”

You may know the name, too. Carrigg played in the World Baseball Classic this past spring for team Israel.

As good as Carrigg has been for the Isotopes his call-up comes as the Rockies are running out of bodies in the outfield. Centerfielders Brenton Doyle and Mickey Moniak have been on the Injured List since late May while left fielder Jordan Beck has joined them, plus the portionless Tyler Freeman is now also down. Freeman’s placement on the seven-day shelf was part of the move to bring up Carrigg. He comes up alongside righty Jeff Criswell, who was solid for the Rockies in 13 games pitched by in 2024. He hurt his elbow and underwent Tommy John surgery during 2025’s spring training — meaning Tuesday is a big day for the reliever, as well.
