Bill Schmidt gives Bud Black vote of confidence ‘Good things are going to happen’

The Colorado Rockies are off to the worst start in Major League Baseball at 3-15 thanks to the sport’s worst offense and that’s prompted some changes, but not the big one some fans wanted.

The Rockies announced they are changing hitting coaches on Thursday, ditching three-time World Series champion Hensley “Bam Bam” Meulens to help spark the offense. In his spot will be former Rockies manager Clint Hurdle, but what about the club’s current skipper, Bud Black? He has led the club to its worst season in franchise history two years in a row, and 219 losses over the past two-plus seasons.

Fans have grown increasingly frustrated with the team’s performance and the seemingly never-ending rebuild. Despite the displeasure, Black doesn’t seem to be going anywhere anytime soon as Rockies general manager Bill Schmidt reaffirmed the club’s commitment to the manager to MLB.com.

“Buddy’s done a good job — it’s a tough situation going through right now,” Schmidt said. “I think he’s been a positive influence. Our guys come to play hard every day, and that’s what I’m looking at. As I said, I’m looking for the growth to continue to develop, and Buddy is the right person for that. Along with Clint helping [to] get this offense going in the right direction, I think good things are going to happen.”

Black is in his ninth season leading the Rockies. He pushed them to the club’s only back-to-back playoff appearances in club history. Some of the highest highs and lowest lows have both happened under Black.

The Rockies pitching staff is more closely tied to Black than the team’s lineup. Though the staff’s 5.29 ERA is the worst in baseball as well. Meaning the Rockies have arguably the worst offense and pitching in the game, and that doesn’t even cover defense, where they have the third-most errors so far.
