Rockies add 2023 All-Star Orlando Arcia to their infield

Orlando Arcia is about to become a member of the Colorado Rockies.

The 2023 All-Star shortstop, who spent the last three-plus seasons with the Atlanta Braves after playing with the Milwaukee Brewers from 2016-21, is finalizing a deal to join the Rox. El Extrabase was first to report the pending move.

The Colorado Rockies and former All-Star SS Orlando Arcia are finalizing a free agent contract, sources tell @ElExtrabase.

Arcia, 30, was released by the Atlanta Braves after being DFA’d.

Once finalized, Arcia can join the team for their road series in Chicago.

Arcia turns 31 in August.

The move is an interesting one for a 9-45 team that is poised to be at full strength in its middle infield.

Colorado got Ezequiel Tovar back from a hip injury on May 16; he’s been on a tear ever since, hitting .447 and posting a 1.199 OPS since then.

Adael Amador has struggled in his long look at second base in recent weeks, posting a .151/.240/.233 line and earning infamy with a blooper for the ages Saturday when he tossed his glove into the air in an apparent attempt to deflect a line drive.

But offseason signee Thairo Estrada is expected back soon from a spring-training wrist injury; he is three games into his rehab assignment at AAA Albuquerque.

Estrada has a .286/.333/.357 line in three games with the Isotopes.

ARCIA IS NEARLY TWO YEARS REMOVED FROM HIS PEAK FORM

Orlando Arcia has hit just .222 since being an All-Star two years ago, with an OPS of .647 since earning his only trip to the midsummer classic.

In his 10 seasons in Major League Baseball, the overwhelming majority of hiswork has been at shortstop, where the Rockies appear set for the short and long term with Tovar, who returned from the injured list during their last road trip.

Beyond shortstop, Arcia has 44 starts at second base, 19 in left field and five at third base — none of them since 2022.

He began falling out of favor in Atlanta last season after struggling following a rough second half of 2023. While his defense remained solid, his average plummeted to .218.

This helped lead the Braves to use him as part of a platoon with Nick Allen to open the season. But after hitting.188 starting five of the first 10 games, the Braves gave Nick Allen the everyday nod.

Arcia’s last start came April 22 against St. Louis; he had just one plate appearance since then. When 2023 NL MVP Ronald Acuña Jr. completed his rehabilitation assignment last Thursday, Arcia was deemed expendable.
