Dr. Ramos & Zach Bye discuss Matt Henningsen’s torn Achilles tendon
Watch: Dr. Ramos & Zach Bye discuss Matt Henningsen’s torn Achilles tendon | Injury Insights | 2 mins
Dr. Joseph Ramos explains why an Achilles tear on the opposite leg can happen after a previous injury, noting that medical literature suggests roughly 10% of athletes who tear one Achilles will eventually tear the other. Months of rehabilitation can place additional stress on the previously healthy tendon, potentially contributing to underlying breakdown before an athlete returns to full-speed competition.
The recovery will be especially challenging for Henningsen. Not only does he have to rehabilitate a freshly injured Achilles, but his other leg may still be recovering from last year’s rupture. Factors such as blood flow, tendon health, genetics, tissue quality and individual healing can all influence the timeline.
The reality is brutal: Matt Henningsen is not expected to return to the field this season, and his road back to the Broncos will be long and difficult.
