Williams: Signs indicate QB Lynch will be Broncos ‘guy,’ eventually

While most of Broncos Country has likely written off Paxton Lynch in terms of his future as Denver’s quarterback, Alfred Williams said he feels the club’s setting him up to “eventually become the guy.”

“The Drive” host said on Tuesday he believes the maneuvering the Broncos have made with Lynch indicate the club plans on him being the quarterback of the future.

“I think everything is signaling that Paxton Lynch will eventually become the guy. I’m telling you, it just feels that way,” Williams said. “It feels like we have the right guy, he’s just got to grow up.”

Earlier on Tuesday, both “Stokley and Zach” host Brandon Stokley and “Schlereth and Evans” host Mark Schlereth said most, if not all, of the confidence in Lynch being a viable option at quarterback has been lost.

“I suppose part of it is my lack of belief that Paxton Lynch is going to develop,” Schlereth said. “And now, I could be completely wrong and he could be working his butt off and great things could be going on for him.

“But, I don’t know anybody else is indelibly scarred like I am watching him cry on the sidelines. I’ll have a really tough time ever not having that image in my head.

Stokley said “not in the least bit” did he have confidence in Lynch to take over and perform well should starter Case Keenum be injured.

“If Case Keenum goes out and he misses four weeks, and you’re playing good football, you want to feel good about your backup quarterback that he’s not going to cost you,” Stokley said.

Williams, however, said he believes the Broncos brought in Keenum as a mentor to Lynch and that after the veteran’s two-year contract with Denver is up, he’ll move on, making way for the former first-round pick.

“The contract is structured so that at the end of two years, Case Keenum walks away,” Williams said. “At the same time, the Broncos can go ahead and extend Paxton Lynch for one year and let him continue on as the quarterback as he’s learning how to play the game right now.”

During mandatory minicamp last week, offensive coordinator Bill Musgrave said Lynch has “really” improved during the spring, and head coach Vance Joseph said during OTAs that he has “been proud of Paxton.”

“Paxton’s growing every day. He’s learning more about football, learning more about defense,” Musgrave said in late May. “He’s learning more about the way that he can be effective at this level of football, which is completely different than college and a world apart from high school.

“He’s going through the process.”

Lynch said last week it’s “really good” to have a guy like Keenum to lean on, that he hasn’t had that opportunity to be around a veteran like that during his short career.

“… The way that he carries himself, how he’s in the building, how he works with these guys and how he interacts with these guys. It’s good to see, especially for me.”
