With Siemian injury, Broncos, again, turn to someone new under center

UPDATE: Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph said during a press conference Friday that quarterback Trevor Siemian suffered a partial dislocation of his non-throwing shoulder and would be placed on season-ending injured reserve.

An MRI on Friday confirmed Siemian suffered a subluxation on his left shoulder, though Joseph said Siemian would not require surgery but rest and rehabilitation.

Siemian underwent surgery in January on for a separated shoulder in the same arm.

The Denver Broncos, on a short week, followed up its first victory in eight games on Sunday with another strong win on the road against the Indianapolis Colts.

However, the team may, for the fourth time this season, see a new quarterback starting under center next weekend.

Thursday’s starter Trevor Siemian suffered a sprained shoulder in his non-throwing arm, head coach Vance Joseph said after the game, and could miss the team’s final two games of the season.

Sources told KUSA-TV’s Mike Klis that Siemian suffered a dislocated shoulder and would likely miss the remainder of the season.

On Friday morning, ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter shared a report from senior writer Jeff Legwold indicating the third-year pro suffered an AC joint sprain and would undergo an MRI to verify the diagnosis.

In relief of Siemian, backup Brock Osweiler led the Broncos back from an eventual 10-point deficit to a 25-13 win, throwing for 12-of-17 passing for 194 yards and two touchdowns. Osweiler would scamper for a rushing score as well and earned a quarterback rating of 147.7.

After the game, head coach Vance Joseph said Osweiler, along with C.J. Anderson and the Denver offensive line, earned a game ball for his efforts.

“He played well. Three touchdowns, two passing and one rushing,” Joseph said. “He played with great poise. He played clean, smart, football for us and it was a win.”

However, Joseph would not speculate on if Osweiler would be the team’s starter next weekend.

Osweiler said after the game he’d “love to be the starter of this football team,” but that the decision would not be up to him.

” I take great pride in coming to work every day and trying to be a great teammate for these guys. I love being a Denver Bronco, so if it was up to me I would love to play,” Osweiler said. “Unfortunately, I don’t make those decisions.”

Should Siemian be unable to play on Christmas Eve against the Washington Redskins, either Siemian or second-year pro Paxton Lynch would likely start under center, making it the team’s fifth starter in the role this season — including two stints with Siemian at quarterback.
