Could the next Broncos QB have been on the field for Super Bowl LIII?

Could the future at quarterback for the Denver Broncos have been on the sidelines Sunday participating in Super Bowl LIII in Atlanta? If things go the way Alfred “Big Al” Williams wants them to, the answer’s yes.

Williams said last week that, if he had run of things over at Dove Valley, the Broncos would go after Los Angeles Rams backup quarterback Sean Mannion, who will be a free agent this offseason and has been touted by some around the organization as the “real deal.”

“I would go for Sean Mannion. He’s been stuck in the backup role there with the Rams. I would bring him in, treat him as if he is my first-round draft pick quarterback this year, play him, and let the organization grow with him,” Williams said.

Mannion also earned a fairly ringing endorsement on Friday, as Rams legendary running back and Pro Football Hall of Famer Eric Dickerson, who told Big Al and DMac on radio row at Super Bowl LIII that the young quarterback is “talented.”

“I’ve said if he goes to the right situation, he can be a star,” Dickerson said.

A third-round pick by the Rams in 2015 out of Oregon State, Mannion has played minimally in his four years in the league, starting just one game (a loss) and completing just 33 passes on 53 attempts for 258 yards, no touchdowns, and one interception.

But Mannion’s lack of experience could be a positive, according to Williams, who said, “He’s coming out of year four and not had any type of injury and nothing but learning behind Jared Goff in this time period.”

“Stokley and Zach” co-host Brandon Stokley, however, said he would not put “all my eggs in that basket,” that he’d rather trade for a guy like Nick Mullens or select a young quarterback with the No. 10-overall pick in this year’s draft.

“I don’t love Sean Mannion at all. I don’t know what there is to love,” Stokley said, adding, “I guess, maybe, you could take a look. But that’s not my plan. That’s not Plan A. Plan A would have to be something else.”
