New NFL policy opens door for full Broncos throwbacks

No longer will Broncos Country have to turn to “Madden” to experience the orange and blue of Denver’s past.

The NFL approved on Thursday alternate helmets for teams wearing throwback uniforms starting in 2022, reports ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

According to Pro Football Talk, teams can pair the second helmet with alternate, throwback or Color Rush uniforms if they adhere to league policies ensuring they’re properly fitted and all players are given opportunities to wear them in practice prior to wearing them in the game.

Teams have been limited to just one helmet since 2013 for safety reasons with the idea that each player would have his own helmet that properly fit and was not altered during the season.

But the new policy allows for teams to have a set of alternative helmets for each player on the roster, ensuring that they’re the same make, model and size of the player’s primary helmet.

Players will be required to get fitted for both at the same time during training camp.

The last time the Broncos used alternate helmets was during the 2009 season, when they had brown helmets and pants and yellow and white jersey tops to commemorate the franchise’s 50th anniversary.

Denver has used the “D” logo on their Color Rush helmets in recent years, but the new policy opens the door for a full throwback to the light blue and orange uniforms not seen in Broncos Country since 1996.
