Denver Broncos release cornerback A.J. Bouye after one season

The Denver Broncos have released cornerback A.J. Bouye, according to 9News Broncos Insider Mike Klis.

The Broncos finalized a trade for the 2017 Pro Bowl cornerback last year on March 18, in exchange for a fourth-round pick to the Jaguars. The release of Bouye creates $13,218,750 in cap space.

Bouye did not finish the season with the Broncos after he was suspended for six games for violating the NFL’s policy on performance-enhancing substances. The cornerback played in just seven games during the 2020 season, missing four games with a shoulder injury and one game against the Atlanta Falcons when he was in the concussion protocol.

A first-round cornerback for the Broncos may be even more in play now since the team has the ninth-overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Bouye finished the season with 23 tackles and six pass break-ups in seven games. The Broncos currently have Bryce Callahan, Michael Ojemudia and Essang Bassey as their other cornerbacks, but both Callahan and Bassey will be coming off season-ending injuries.
