Clough: Munchak ‘checks off more boxes’ than any Broncos HC candidate

With the Denver Broncos currently in the thick of a head coaching search, it appears the team has whittled down its short list to five candidates: Chuck Pagano, Zac Taylor, Mike Munchak, Brian Flores, and Vic Fangio.

And among those, 104.3 The Fan’s Sandy Clough said on Thursday night, one name, in particular, stands out from the pack.

“I think Munchak encompasses or would incorporate more of the qualities, would check off more boxes than any of the other candidates at this point,” Clough said of the Pittsburgh Steelers offensive line coach and former Tennessee Titans head coach.

Clough said he suspects Munchak, who interviews with the Broncos on Friday, is the “No. 1 candidate” at the moment

And among that group of five, “Schlereth and Evans” co-host Mark Schlereth said on Thursday that Munchak is the direction he’d go in, though he could stand for a more exhaustive search.

“I’m just saying let’s not being a hurry to get where we’re eventually going to be. Eventually, we’re going to have a head coach,” Schlereth said. “Let’s not just rush into it. Let’s make sure that the exhaustive search is exhaustive.”

Schlereth, however, did laud Munchak’s credentials as a Hall of Fame offensive lineman and offensive line coach.

“He was a phenomenal player. And all the offensive lines that he’s coached have been great,” Schlereth said. “That has been one of the biggest weaknesses … on this football team for the better part of a decade just about.”

This year alone, Munchak coached three Steelers offensive linemen — guard David DeCastro, center Maurkice Pouncey, and tackle Alejandro Villanueva — to Pro Bowl nominations.
