Broncos want competition for Lock, don’t want to “force it”

The Denver Broncos want to bring in competition for Drew Lock, but the club doesn’t want to “force it.”

Speaking Thursday to the assembled media at UCHealth Training Center, Broncos general manager George Paton said he and his team have been “monitoring” the quarterback market and they have a “plan in place.”

“There are a lot of ways to acquire a quarterback. Fortunately, we have a quarterback here,” Paton said of Lock. “We have a nice quarterback room. We do want to bring in competition. We’re not going to force it. And, so, we’re monitoring the market right now.”

Paton, who recently attended North Dakota State quarterback prospect Trey Lance’s pro day in Fargo, said he would continue to travel to evaluate players of all positions, including not only, “but definitely,” quarterback.

A quarterback with the No. 9 overall pick in this year’s NFL Draft is also in play, Paton reiterated on Thursday.

Two weeks ago, the general manager said the team’s philosophy with its top pick is they are “open to any position.”

“We’re going to take the best player that can help this football team. Quarterback, safety — it doesn’t matter what player and what position,” Paton said. “If it’s the best player on the board, we’re going to take him.”
