Broncos explore ‘every option’ with Lynch out with shoulder sprain

Denver Broncos head coach Vance Joseph said the club would consider “every option” moving forward after revealing Paxton Lynch suffered a sprained shoulder in Saturday night’s preseason dress rehearsal.

Joseph confirmed reports from early Monday saying that Lynch would miss a few weeks with the injury, saying the second-year quarterback will miss “a couple of real football games.”

Lynch will also be sidelined for Thursday’s preseason finale against the Arizona Cardinals, Joseph said, and rookie Kyle Sloter will get the start.

“This week, we’re going to give Kyle the start. And if Kyle is tying his shoe, we’ll put Trevor in and run the football,” Joseph said.

Wide receiver Jordan Taylor will act as the emergency quarterback Thursday as well, Joseph said.

When asked specifically on Monday if the Broncos would consider bringing in former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick, Joseph said, “Every option available will be explored,” though he called Lynch’s injury a “short-term issue”

Lynch played just one series in the 20-17 win over the Green Bay Packers, completing one pass on two attempts for nine yards.

Earlier in the week, Joseph announced that Trevor Siemian beat out Lynch for the Broncos starting quarterback role, though he said Lynch would be firmly the team’s second-teamer despite outside calls for Sloter to take that position.

Joseph said he’s been “impressed” with the first-year quarterback out of Northern Colorado, “but he stands where he stands” — with the third-team offense.

In two games of action, Sloter’s gone 16-for-20 for 193 yards, two touchdowns, and no interceptions, giving him a quarterback rating of 140.2 — good enough for fourth among all NFL quarterbacks this preseason.
