Does Broncos Country have the patience for a coach to develop a QB?

As year two of Vance Joseph’s tenure as Denver Broncos head coach wraps up, the sentiment among Broncos Country that he is not the man to lead the franchise to the playoffs, an AFC Championship, or a Super Bowl continues to grow.

But on Monday, “The Drive” co-host Alfred “Big Al” Williams said Joseph or not, it’s unrealistic to expect a return to winning ways if the Broncos fanbase doesn’t have the patience to allow a coach to develop a quarterback.

“We won’t do the hard stuff because, guess what, it’s hard,” Williams said.

Williams said that he believes Joseph hasn’t “done anything wrong” but instead has been saddled with the likes of Case Keenum, Trevor Siemian, Paxton Lynch and Brock Osweiler at quarterback.

“I think we just don’t have the quarterback to win the requisite amount of games in the NFL,” Williams said.

It takes time to develop a young quarterback, Williams said, but the growing pains have been worth it to other franchises, like the Los Angeles Rams and the Chicago Bears.

“The hard way may take five years. It may take seven years. But once you have it, then you’re good,” Williams said.

Instead, Broncos fans favor the quick-fix solutions, Williams said.

“What we want now is, go out there and get a guy like Joe Flacco so that we can at least compete for the AFC Championship, to get back into the playoffs,” Williams said. “You know what we want? We want to trade for a guy like Derek Carr to see what he has to try to get us over the top.”

With all that being the case, Williams said it’s unfair to be asked to evaluate Joseph, whom he believes is a “good coach in this league who’s been dealt subpar quarterbacks two seasons in a row.”

“If he was the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons, if he was the head coach of the Green Bay Packers, if he was the head coach of the Carolina Panthers, I would give you a more definitive answer one way or the other,” Williams said. “But he’s not.

“And all the coaches that are coaching the rookies, you give them a pass because you say we’re dealing with a rookie quarterback. He’s not going to win.”
