The Denver Broncos are re-signing fullback Michael Burton, who has spent his last two years in Denver. The details of how long the contract is and how much money is involved has not been disclosed. Luca Evans of the Denver Post was the first to report the news.

Burton has been a reliable asset in Sean Payton’s offense over the past two years, and had a career year in 2024. His 10 catches, 65 receiving yards and two total touchdowns were all career-highs for the 33-year-old.

While Burton is a solid fullback, his value comes on special teams. In the modern NFL, the fullback is a dying breed, and while Burton had a career year, he was only on the field 15.88% of the time when Denver was on offense. However, he was on the field for 62.16% of the total special teams snaps, third most on the team.

Burton spent the 2020 season with the New Orleans Saints and Sean Payton, but also was a key on special teams with Darren Rizzi as the coordinator of that unit. With the Broncos recently bringing Rizzi on board to be the team’s special teams coordinator in 2025, Burton will now have familiarity with Rizzi’s system that he will be bringing over from New Orleans.

Since his 4-year contract with the Detroit Lions as a rookie, Burton has signed a 1-year deal every year since as he’s jumped around the league. He went from Detroit, to Washington, to New Orleans, to Kansas City (where he was a part of the 2022 team that won the Super Bowl) and finally to Denver.

This is a solid, low-risk signing for the Broncos. Burton has shown his ability to contribute in multiple areas of the game, and has been a guy that’s consistently been healthy and available throughout his career.
