Broncos add ex-player/coach Roman Phifer to front office

Denver Broncos general manager George Paton’s front office continues to grow, as the team added former NFL player, scout and coach Roman Phifer as senior personnel executive on Tuesday.

With an NFL tenure that spans 20 years and three Super Bowl championships, Phifer will be heavily involved with both the pro and college scouting departments for the Broncos, according to a team release. He’ll also maintain a presence at UCHealth Training Center in addition to scouting on the road.

The hire comes just a day after Denver named Kelly Kleine as executive director of football operations and special advisor to the general manager.

Kleine, who worked alongside Paton with the Minnesota Vikings for nearly a decade, will serve as the primary liaison for the Broncos’ football operations and have significant responsibilities with pro and college scouting.

An assistant linebackers coach for the Broncos from 2009-’10, Phifer spent the past three seasons with the Detroit Lions as the team’s West Coast area scout.

Previous to his stint in Detroit, Phifer oversaw all aspects of day-to-day player welfare and life skills as the director of player development at his alma mater, UCLA.
