Avs 2019 first-round pick Newhook inks entry-level deal

With his college season in the books, standout forward Alex Newhook has his sights set on the NHL.

The Boston College standout has inked a three-year, entry-level deal with the Colorado Avalanche, the team announced Wednesday.

Newhook, the Avs top pick (16th overall) in the 2019 NHL Draft, will forego his remaining eligibility and report to the American Hockey League’s Colorado Eagles.

A standout on the college level, Newhook earned the Tim Taylor Award — given to the NCAA Division I rookie of the year — in his freshman year in 2019-’20, the first player in Boston College history to do so.

Hockey East’s rookie of the year that season as well, Newhook tallied 42 points (19 goals and 23 assists), ranking ninth nationally in points per game.

However, Newhook’s sophomore campaign was cut in half due to mandatory quarantine protocols preceding the 2021 IIHF World Junior Championship. He scored 7 goals and 9 assists in 12 games.
