Denver NWSL adds one of Colorado’s greatest athletes to ownership group

The Denver NWSL team made another big announcement on Tuesday morning as the team is just over a year away from playing its first game. With stadium plans being announced and money figures being discussed, the franchise added a new member to its investor group, and it’s someone who is one of the best athletes to ever come from the state of Colorado.

Mikaela Shiffrin, one of the greatest competitive skiers of all time, is stepping in to join the franchise as an investor. The 30-year-old is from Vail and has always called the Centennial State her home. She has the most alpine skiing victories in the history of the sport by a man or a woman, two Olympic gold medals, five overall World Cup championships and four world championships in slalom.

“I’m beyond thrilled to join the ownership group of Denver NWSL and support something so meaningful in the community I call home,” Shiffrin said in the club’s statement. “The sport culture in Colorado is rich and deep, and—most notably—the growth of women’s sports is one of the most exciting movements in our culture today. I am very excited about the public-private partnerships with Denver, Centennial, and the Cherry Creek school district that will help deliver state-of-the-art facilities designed specifically for women. To be part of it, and to help bring professional women’s soccer to Colorado, is not only an incredible investment opportunity—but it is both an honor and a joy. Shout out to the city of Denver—I’m so excited to support the home team!”

Shiffrin has been one of the pioneers for women’s sports in Colorado. Athletes like Lindsey Vonn and Missy Franklin have done a great job representing the states while others like Mallory Swanson are on the come-up, but no woman from the state has accomplished more than Shiffrin.

While Shiffrin’s first love and specialty is skiing, she showed that she’s not a newbie to the pitch in a video of her announcing her new ownership status. Back in 2021, the U.S. Ski & Snowboard Team posted a video of the star doing some drills and working on her craft. Was that the sign that she wanted to get into the sport in some capacity?
